MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2022

Lucky Daye had a stronghold on my music playlist for 2022. His Second official album — and arguably breakout album — CandyDrip was and still is the very necessary pure R&B that has been missing from the music world for a while.

I had CandyDrip on repeat (thanks, Spotify!) as soon as it dropped in early 2022. If you’re not familiar with the album, you probably heard his first single “Over” which was released in late 2021. Before “Over” dropped, I was also a fan of his song featuring Yebba called “How Much Can a Heart Take,” from his 2021 album Table For Two, which won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album.

I first heard of Lucky Daye when I saw him on Raphael Saddiq’s NPR appearance on Tiny Desk in 2019. He was a special guest and killed it so much so that Raphael brought him back out at the end of the session.

CandyDrip is lush soul, a bit of pop, and contemporary R&B with some trap mixed in — it’s modern but also classic. I read a review that described his voice as “caramelized” which is pretty accurate. If you’re not up on Lucky Daye, give him a listen.

My favorite tracks from CandyDrip are linked below but the whole album is a solid vibe:

“God Body”

“Feels Like”

“NWA”

“Fever”

“Cherry Forest”

“Ego”
